Safe at Home: A Novel

Product Description

The spring of ’53 started out like any other for sports columnist Jack Hall, as he and the rest of his small southern town, Whitney, eagerly awaited the magical first pitch that would open the Bobcat’s season. But when ticket sales wane with the new distractions of air conditioning and I Love Lucy, the Bobcats face an early end not only to the season but to their careers as well. The team needs a white knight to save them and ironically, that white knight seems to be a 17 year old "colored kid", Percy Jackson, who’s got a .364 batting average and has never seen a grounder he couldn’t chase down.

Not everyone—not even most people—though can wrap their heads around an integrated baseball field, even if they have seen them on TV. This is Whitney. Things don’t change and they don’t need to change. Do they?

Hearts, minds, faith and tradition will be tested as will friendships and marriages when this sleepy southern town comes to grips with itself amid the early years of the Civil Rights Movement.

    Safe at Home
As someone who grew up enjoying minor league baseball with my grandfather and in the era of de-segregation, this book vividly brought back fond and not-so-fond memories. Written with a fun style while causing us to think about serious subjects, this book is a must for all baby boomers, all who love baseball, and all who long for true racial reconciliation.

I loved this book. The writing was solid. Doster is not going to win the Pulitzer, but he knows what he's doing. More importantly, it was a good story. Doster knows the south and he knows baseball and he uses this knowledge as the backdrop for a powerful story.

Perhaps the two things that set this book apart from other Christian fiction is it's subtlety and it's truthfulness. Subtlety is rare indeed in Christian fiction. Doster understands that the Christian writer needs not use fiction as a vehicle for systematic theology or as a thinly veiled Gospel tract. The faith of Jack Hall and his family is always there, Doster doesn't shy away from it, but there is more substance to the story which leads us to the second great thing about the book.

Doster weaves a truthful story. Jack Hall, even though he is a Christian, is still a sinner in need of grace. Throughout the story there is a gentle reminder that the Christian culture in the south needed, and still does... Read more

It's hard to believe this is Doster's first book. He has that rare ability to tell a story so well that it doesn't matter what its about. For example, instead of saying that a preacher is nervous and unsure of what to say, he writes: "...he ventured into the uncomfortable unknown, and had no idea of where he was leading. He cleared his throat, hesitated, looked down at the notes he didn't have..." WOW! There are countless other places throughout the book where Doster crafts the most enjoyable language to describe the events and characters. At one point I thought the only shortcoming of the book was that he had not fully developed the character of Percy Jackson, the black ballplayer. Then I realized that this was intentional as the story revolves around Percy, but is really about the other characters and how they react to an upheaval in the relationship between the races. The ending didn't let me down - no romanticized happily-ever-after or pandering tragedy. I'll buy the... Read more

Clean cheap and efficient with a stylish design that puts the cute in execute. This engine of rodent revenge gives you endless options to display your mastery over these soldiers of the devil. The trap is easy to bait and holds these egotistical little vermin in a grip that, if no action is taken, will slowly squeeze the squeek out of them and send a message to their fellow gangsters. Look at the action shot I placed under the product image above.
The tiny bait door is cleverly placed so that you can open it and look the little monsters eye to eye and they will know who THE MAN is. The delayed death feature gives you other options for execution if you want to get revenge and further demonstrate your domination. With a small bucket you can waterboard them and the trap is microwave safe but be sure to use the lowest power setting to avoid mouse detonation. This is not clear in the directions.
This is a great little trap and so much fun.
OK OK this is satire. The point is... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars It DOES work, August 18, 2010
This review is from: Ortho 0320110 Home Defense Max Kill & Contain Mouse Trap - 2 Pack (Lawn & Patio)
A mouse/mice had gotten in my pantry necessitating a very time consuming cleanup with bleach and disinfectants. I was determined to get rid of said vermin. I bought 3 different traps to test effectiveness, this Ortho Kill & Contain trap, another Ortho that is spring-loaded, and a Victor maze-type trap that is live catch. The one that worked right away was the Ortho Kill & Contain - worked the very first night. For me, the mouse was killed. Even if this trap doesn't kill the mouse as some others have mentioned, I will still use this trap. My main goal is not a totally humane kill, it's to trap the mice and get rid of them and this trap does do it effectively. Although I understand how some people might be very concerned that the mouse isn't killed instantly, giving a 1 star rating is a bit extreme. Mice may seem cute but they are disease carrying pests.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy to use for the squeamish, July 27, 2009
This review is from: Ortho 0320110 Home Defense Max Kill & Contain Mouse Trap - 2 Pack (Lawn & Patio)
The trap I used to find at local home improvement stores (a see-saw type box that rests on a pivot point--the mouse travels to the far end to get the bait, tipping the box and shutting the door) is no longer around. So I tried this. Easier to set than my previous traps. It has a bait door that simply pops open and a push lever that sets the trap inside. I use peanut butter. The closed box seems quite sanitary, and as Ortho claims, blends into the surroundings rather unobtrusively. The side with the lever has easy to read indicators--"set", "mouse caught" and "reset"--that can be read from a distance if you don't want to get too close. And the trap has a little handle to pick it up for disposal (without getting anywhere near the mouse inside). This is advertised as a "kill and contain" trap--a rather conventional plastic snap lever nicely concealed inside a plastic sleeve (sanitizing the experience of killing a mouse). I can't vouch for the claims that some make, but some have... Read more

I purchased this for my husband. He loves hiding things. I swear he was a squirrel in a past life. Anyway, back to the product. The first order had a defect. One book was glued higher than the other and caused it to lean to one side. They shipped me another out quickly. The hiding place isn't huge but it will hold a few items. My husband decided to hide a spare set of keys and a few coins in it. The top closes securly so you don't have to worrly about anything popping the books open. It looks natural on a book shelf because it is made from two real books. I would buy this again as a gift.

Good hidden storage space; looks completely natural on the bookshelf, because it *is* two books hooked together with storage carved into them.

2.0 out of 5 stars Political / religious book titles....., October 21, 2011
    Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Southwest Specialty Products 60005S Double Book Vault (Tools & Home Improvement)
The book vault seems sturdy, but the books I received were "White Protestant Nation" and "The Preacher and the President". This item was intended to be a gift, and I really can't see the recipient displaying either of these on his bookshelf. Aside from the fact that visitors who are unfamiliar with the first title might think he has something offensive on his bookshelf, I was expecting something neutral that escapes notice - like a dictionary or a biography. I'm uncomfortable gifting something politically charged or with religious themes.
